Taking groundwater samples and Measuring water level using leveling instrument (tasks 7 and 6)

Our group members are Chinese exchange students Rouchen Pan, Haoxuan Bi and Finnish students Sauli Mergold, Minna Nousiainen and Viivi Viherkoski.
The weather was pretty cold and sunny.

7. Taking groundwater samples using monitoring well

Our first task was to take groundwater samples from groundwater well. Area was in the middle of forest, about 50 meters from the lake, in a gentle slope. The well was installed just few days ago.

The diameter of well is 52 mm and depth is 8 m.

First we measured water level from the top of the well, which was 2,82 m. Then we counted height of waterspout, which was 5,18 m.

Then we counted the volume of water in pipe: π x 0,052 m / 4 x 5,18 m = 11 l

After that we used Bailer to take water sample, and we measured following things with field measurements:

conductivity: 158,3 µS/cm, temperature: 7,2 °C, pH: 5,54, dissolved oxygen: 6,74 mg/l. Water was cloudy.

After that we pumped the whole volume of water with specific pump, and measured pumping rate with volymetric measurement. We measured that pumping rate is 8,6 l/min.

Then we waited that well fills up, but groundwater flow to the pipe was slow.
We tried to pump water after 15 minutes, but water was so muddy that we couldn’t get the sample. We waited another 15 minutes for water to clean up and used Bailer to get sample. It was still pretty muddy, but we kept the sample.

6. Measuring water level using leveling instrument

Another task was to measure water level of Pieni-Valkeinen and Iso-Valkeinen lakes. We used leveling instrument. Start point was on manhole cover in the parking lot, and its height is +98,965 m.

First we measured the surface of Pieni-Valkeinen. We were able to measure it from one spot. We measured that level of Pieni-Valkeinen was 97,1 m.

Then we measured the level of Iso-Valkeinen. We had to make several spots to scope to plate.

Here is illustration of measurements from manhole cover to Iso-Valkeinen and from Iso-Valkeinen to manhole cover. We measured that the level of Iso-Valkeinen was 90,055 m.
Measurement error of manhole cover was 0,615 m
