Groundwater observation well was installed yesterday

The City of Kuopio installed yesterday new groundwater observation well for our educational purposes. Thank you very much! Now it is possible to analyze both groundwater and surface water quality concerning the Lake Pieni-Valkeinen. This gives us also possibility to educate groundwater monitoring and sampling methods using a authentic learning environment.

The groundwater observation well is located to western side of lake and it is ten meters deep. Well screen is five meters long starting directly from the bottom. Specifications of the observation well:

  1. Today 14/10/2016 groundwater level was measured first time. It was 2.37 meters below the head of the well. Which means 100.17 meters in N2000 system (102.54 m - 2.37 m). Water level in Pieni-Valkeinen is today something like 97.065 meters regarding students measurements.

In other words, today groundwater level is 3.105 meters abowe lake. So fascinating fact!
